Perspectives on Therapy

Therapy gives you a chance to figure out what's in the way of your happiness and provides the tools to move those obstacles out of the way. For those struggling with low confidence, anxiety, and relationships, help is here! For women struggling with miscarriage, infertility, pregnancy and the postpartum transition, I offer specialized treatment including group therapy. Learn how to balance work and family life without becoming overwhelmed. Increase assertiveness; learn to ask for what you need and truly receive. Recognize and understand the losses in your life. Get support for parenting. Plan for major events like marriage, pregnancy, career change and an empty nest. I will encourage and challenge you to discover your own truths in an accepting environment. I am a genuine, honest witness with whom to access your own power and find solutions to problems. Therapy can be a life-altering process that leaves you happier and able to live more fully. Approach My therapeutic approach stems from Person-Centered therapy which uses the relationship between the therapist and client as its main point of influence. Cognitive Behavioral strategies are used with clients whose symptoms benefit from these interventions. Ethical Considerations Ethical guidelines are an important part of the therapeutic relationship. I consider anything that acts in contrary to the health and well being of my clients to be unethical, and act accordingly to rectify the situation. In addition, should a client require services which are not offered by my office, I will work with this client to assess their needs and provide referrals for another clinician. Confidentiality Under most circumstances our sessions are completely confidential. There are some circumstances however, in which I am required by law to report information about sessions. These circumstances include: if a client is threatening bodily harm to him/herself or to someone else, or if there is suspected child or elder abuse, or abuse of the disabled. If my records are subpoenaed, then I am required to provide them. In addition, I regularly review my work with a psychotherapy consultant and occasionally with a professional consultation group. If and when it is necessary to consult with these individuals regarding a client's work I will make every effort to protect the client's anonymity.

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of Washington and have worked in the area of psychology/social services since 1994. I attended the University of California, Santa Cruz where I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. During my studies I worked closely with the Developmental Psychology laboratory, completing research for a paper submitted to the American Psychological Society by Harriett Tenenbaum entitled Mexican-American parents’ cognitive demand of their preschool child: Gender & parent attitudes. I also contributed to a research project observing children called The Children's Museum Study. I studied in Costa Rica for a year, attending La Universidad de Costa Rica, where I learned about Latino culture and became fluent in Spanish. I spent my time studying psychology along side Costa Rican students, increasing my awareness of cross-cultural perspectives in psychology as well as in society. I subsequently worked as a Teacher's Aid where I helped other students study and understand psychology. Upon completion of my Bachelor's degree, I presented my own research paper entitled The Social Construction of Chicano Youth Gangs at the 68th Annual Meeting of The Pacific Sociological Association. I have worked at local social service and mental health agencies aiding families with financial planning, working with children in the prevention of substance abuse, giving care to adolescents in residential treatment centers, and doing therapy. I received a Master of Arts degree in Mental Health Counseling from Seattle University after completing a clinical internship at Seattle Mental Health, where I continued to work for the following three years. I currently practice in the Greenlake neighborhood of Seattle.
